A Leaf in the Wind: The Winged Lemur
Despite the title I’ve given this segment, I’m going to start with my thoughts on the background scenery in this screencap. Just like all the art in The Legend of Korra, Air Temple Island’s scenery is flawless, especially in the light of the rising sun. The pinkish light reflecting off the mountain as the sun rises, the soft shadows, the plant life… all of it is just perfect. On a side note, I also love the railing on the walkway- particularly the way the posts are carved to be curved in a way that’s reminiscent of airbending. Alright, now that that’s out of the way… on to the more emotional(?) part!
I’m not going to lie, I spazzed out when I saw the winged lemur flying across the screen- and nope, I’m not ashamed at all… why? Because it proves that just like Appa wasn’t the last of his kind, Momo wasn’t the last of his either
unless winged lemurs can reproduce asexually like Toph. That fact alone is wonderful enough, but… just try to imagine for a moment what Aang’s expression/emotions were like when he discovered that Momo wasn’t the last of the winged lemurs- just thinking about that is enough to make me extremely happy, even though I’m sure that my imagination wasn’t able to capture the full extent of Aang’s joy in that moment.
